by Greg Palast for The Guardian Get off it. All the carping, belly-aching and complaining about George Bush's incompetence in Iraq, from both the Left and now the Right, is just dead wrong. On the third anniversary of the tanks rolling over Iraq's border, most of the 59 million Homer Simpsons who **********Palast returns to the pages of the Guardian today with this column. Don't kid yourself -- Bush and his co-conspirator, Dick Cheney, accomplished exactly what they set out to do. In case you've forgotten what their real mission was, let me remind you of White House spokesman Ari Fleisher's original announcement, three years ago, launching of what he called, "Operation Iraqi Liberation." O.I.L. How droll of them, how cute. Then, Karl Rove made the giggling boys in the White House change it to "OIF" -- Operation Iraqi Freedom. But the 101st Airborne wasn't sent to Basra to get its hands on Iraq's OIF. ....

Greg Palast is a key commentator in the new Guerilla News Network (GNN) film, American Blackout, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival this week. Palast also introduced GNN to the Cynthia McKinney story, which the film is based on and which appears in GNN's book, True Lies. By Matt Pascarella [New York] On Sunday, January 8th, Reverend Jesse Jackson attacked Republican plans to buy up and eliminate African-American neighborhoods in New Orleans. In a press conference at the Sheraton Hotel in New York, Jackson decried what he considers a systematic program by the Washington Administration to turn "survivors" into a permanent Diaspora of refugees denied both their homes and the political power of their concentrated votes in the city. Citing the findings of investigative reporter Greg Palast, who joined Jackson on his national radio broadcast earlier that morning, the civil rights leader called for a "Right of Return" for Katrina survivors. On the broadcast with Jackson, Palast noted that, "The destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina was made much worse because of 'Hurricane George' -- the Bush Administration's neglect and cronyism in planning for recovery from the disaster." Palast, whose reports appear in Harper's Magazine and on BBC television, has been investigating what he calls, "Hurricane Katrina as a profit center." Jackson was in New York to chair the annual meeting of the Wall Street Project Economic Summit. The Project, a conference running through Wednesday, aims to pressure pension funds of government, unions and churches to re-invest in community redevelopment not just in New Orleans, but in areas throughought the United States blighted by what Jackson called, "an economic Katrina every day" destroying jobs and lives.

By Greg Palast New York -- Today and tomorrow every 8-year-old in the state of New York will take a test. It's part of George Bush's No Child Left Behind program. The losers will be left behind to repeat the third grade. Try it yourself. This is from the state's actual practice test. Ready, class? "The year 1999 was a big one for the Williams sisters. In February, Serena won her first pro singles championship. In March, the sisters met for the first time in a tournament final. Venus won. And at doubles tennis, the Williams girls could not seem to lose that year." And here's one of the four questions: "The story says that in 1999, the sisters could not seem to lose at doubles tennis. This probably means when they played "A two matches in one day "B against each other "C with two balls at once "D as partners" OK, class, do you know the answer? Bill O'Reilly is fighting a war for Christmas, against the dark, Satanic forces arrayed against St. Nick and Yuletide logs and Jingle Bells. He doesn't want anyone saying, "Happy Holidays" or "Happy Hanukkah" or "Happy Kwanzaa." He wants everyone to say, "Merry Christmas" -- OR ELSE. O'Reilly is Santa's little hit-man. Now there's a lot of civil liberties freaks out there who think it's wrong to use tax money paid by a lot of non-Christians to support O'Reilly's choice of religious celebrations. But I'm sure our republic will survive seizure of City Hall for a tree-lighting ceremony. I'm not worried about the offence the Merry Christmas Crusaders will cause Jews, Muslims and Sikhs. They have greater dangers to deal with right now.

By Scott Thill OK, I'm biting Greg Palast's rhyme somewhat. The heads-up he sent out to his list today had a working title of "Upset that Special Someone For the Holidays," but I'm used to journos like him doing all the hard investigative work while us armchair scribes sling the mud and the word. And to do that, he needs some good holiday help, so if you want to spend the Black Friday aftermath doing something smart with your money, try this on for size. Comedic details from Greg: "There is no way I can expose this stuff without the help of a killer investigative staff. But they keep asking for food and a lump of coal to stay warm. It being Christmas, I can't say no. All kidding aside, the investigations we have conducted for BBC TV, Democracy Now, and Harper's over the years have won us awards, brought some bad guys to justice, but have not come close to covering our costs. We need your donations for us to keep going, to continue digging, and telling the truth on'm." To do that, click here - http://www.gregpalast.com/premiums.htm and check out the book and DVD packages Greg has going for the holidays, all of which are worth your time and his sweat. Especially the Bush Family Fortunes DVD, which sorts through the sordid details of arms-trading family that thinks democracy is their dynasty. Yeah, dots get connected. But the treat is going to be Palast's next tome, which sounds so far like it's taking dead aim at The Dick. Another in the failed line of rightward nuts who can't seem to live without fucking up someone's program. Are they gone yet? Why not? Jesus Christmas.
