Last night, we had disappointing but not too surprising news from Sanford, FL. We wish Trayvon Martin’s family the very best as they continue to seek justice – an elusive commodity in today’s America. We will focus on Zimmerman’s acquittal throughout the week.

Intervene in Syria,even limited,is case of selective outrage driven by a few w/good motives but mostly by corporate oil interests,mil industrial complex, neocons. We cant bomb chem stockpiles 4fear of collateral damage;
I think it’s a reflection of our nation’s terribly askew priorities when so many people work to politicize and prejudge a tragic event such as the Trayvon/Zimmerman incident. It also testifies to the prejudice in many people as they cast firm judgements from their own passionate feelings while forgetting that they were not present and can therefore NOT possibly KNOW what happened. Further, most of those people were not even in the court room nor privy to ALL parts, components, and pieces of the case set before the jury of 12 citizens. This has been a tragedy for the entire community where the incident took place and the community properly employed due process of law to serve justice as best as they knew how for an ugly situation. It is NOT our place to judge them.
BrooksL – it is nice to see a comment from you. But, I disagree with your conclusion and you are factually wrong on one count – the jury consisted of only 6 citizens not 12 and it was not representative of the community. Moreover, the jury was not present either. What we do know is that an unarmed 17 year-old is dead and the armed man who followed him and killed him is free. It is OUR place to judge.
A boy is dead, he was being followed, Zimmerman had a gun.. That alone is not enough information to draw a conclusion. Not an honest one.. The evidence suggest that Martin initiated the violence. Once under attack , Zimmerman had no choice but to defend himself.
The reason Zimmerman only had 6 jurors is because this was not a capital case. A capital case is one that has death as a penalty. . 6 jurors is a advantage to the prosecution. They only need to convince 6 people, not 12. And the defense has to find one holdout from a pool of 6 not 12. The state was given every opportunity to convict Zimmerman , but couldn’t because the facts got in the way.
Thanks for the clarification; I didn’t realize FL law only requires a jury of 12 when the charge is capitol. So, if the community in FL is not happy with a jury of 6, they can follow established procedure to change the law (apparently 6 has been acceptable for a long time there). If they think Zimmerman should have been charged with a capitol offense, that was the DA’s call (who is presumably the people’s elected advocate) and there is a procedure to boot a DA out of office. If the FL community does not feel the jurors adequately represented the community, then again, that was a combination of the DA’s call and existing FL jury selection law – and there is procedure to change that if the people of FL believe it is necessary. Because I am not a part of that FL community and I do have some reasonable confidence in our US state court systems and it’s corrective feedback mechanisms, and I am not privy to all the information of the case, I therefor trust the FL community to deal with the issue and do not think it my place to judge it. Even in the worst case of criminal mishandling of the case by legal authorities, again there are already procedures in place to deal with such things. Trying to drag this event far out of Florida seems to invite all kinds of inaccuracies and misrepresentations. …if anyone thinks Zimmerman is really “free” they have a rather limited understanding of the whole situation; acquitted does not necessarily mean “free” in a practical sense – the guy is living in significant fear for his life.

Hal, the problem with your conclusion is, you don’t accept the fact that Martin returned to where Zimmerman was and attacked him. You claim Martin was innocent because he wasn’t armed and was just going home. I’m sorry for the Martin family and the supporters that believe Martin was totally innocent.
It just isn’t true, the evidence doesn’t support zimmerman as a stalker that murdered Martin.
By ignoring the fact you and the Martin supporters do a grave mis service to justice. It’s terrible that you are so willing to lock a man up for life for something he didnt do.
